The Forward Stroke

Two basic versions are shown here. Teresa is showing the stroke used for speed, with the paddle at a high angle, while Lori demonstrates the low angle stroke that is used in rough water and high winds. The low angle allows for a faster brace with less wind-buffeting on the blades.
