Paddlers!  Come play with us.

Let’s take advantage of the warm water with a skills practice.

Disclaimer: We will have experienced paddlers on this trip, but they will not be responsible for telling you what is or is not safe for you to do. We watch out for one another and assist one another, but all individuals are responsible for, and manage their own safety. This responsibility includes assessing your gear, skill level, and physical conditioning relative to conditions and location, as well as making decisions about what you will or will not do. Participants acknowledge that kayaking on the open sea or bay is inherently dangerous and can lead to physical injury including death as well as property damage. Participants, on their behalf and on behalf of their heirs and assignees, agree to hold the announcers and other participants blameless in the event of such injury, damage or death. Please join us if you want to mildly stretch your capabilities, but please stay home if you would be wildly stretching them. Participants should have bracing skills, be able to self-rescue and assist in the rescue of others. They should be able to launch and/or land in small surf

La Jolla Sea Caves Paddle

Jen’s shop at the shores is providing tandem sit-on-top kayaks for this special guided paddle for the club. If you have never seen those caves, this is a great way to view them. SOT kayaks are a great and easy way to go through the surf and allow for sliding off the boat to swim inside the caves. Dominick Lemarie will be guiding us, and providing information about the caves in both English and French! The cost is $25 per person, which includes all equipment (or wear your own life vest). Kids 6 and older are welcomed (6-14-year-olds must be on a boat with an adult). We will meet at 8:30 at the LJ Sea Caves shop, located at 2164 Avenida De La Playa, above the Shore Rider Bar and Grill, and launch at 9 am for a 1-hour 40-minute paddle. You must call the shop and pay in advance, and there is a 20 person limit, so call soon. 858 454-0111. Also, email Jay Murdock for the waiver to sign and bring with you.

The Canoe

Since, the weather this weekend has most of us off the water, thought I would share this movie.

This film captures the human connection and bond created by Canada’s well-known craft & symbol, the canoe. Through the stories of five paddlers across the province of Ontario, Canada – a majestic background both in it’s landscape & history – the film underscores the strength of the human spirit and how the canoe can be a vessel for creating deep and meaningful connections.

Batiquitos Lagoon Annual Kayak Cleanup Event

The Batiquitos Annual Kayak Cleanup Event is the only time of year when kayaks are allowed on Batiquitos Lagoon, which is an ecological preserve bordering Carlsbad, Ca and Encinitas, Ca. It is one of the few remaining wetlands in the U.S. and is home to many species of birds, fish and animals, many of whom are endangered. The Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation is a non profit 501(c)(3) run entirely by volunteers. This is our major fundraising event of the year.

Bring your own kayak or use one provided by REI, minimum age is 12 years. It is a two hour event fundraiser priced at $60 per person. Kayaks will launch every 2 hours in groups of six with a water safety instructor. Participants will go around the lagoon and collect trash, plastic, debris etc. The cost is $60.

There will be scheduled family events all day on site such as: live animal demonstrations, bird viewing, and arts & crafts for kids. REI will sponsor a Go Pro master class and a My First Cleanup event for ages 4+. Dos Bandidos Baja food truck will be on site both days. Have fun and help the environment. Safety Paddlers Needed!

helpingourwoundedvets-300x57

TeamRiver Runner needs safety paddlers for their fundraiser next month. TRR’s second fundraiser, “Pints and Paddles for a Cause“, will be on Sunday November 15.  Again it will be held at the Barefoot Bar and Grill and part of San Diego Beer Week.  We expect it to be a bigger event than last year with additional sponsors, including Jackson Kayak.

It will start off with “Pro” kayak races at 9am, Amateur Races at 10am, a recreational paddle from 11-1, beer, food and music at the Barefoot Bar and Grill from 10-2.  Jackson Kayaks will provide all personnel for the races but we will need 16-20 safety paddlers for the recreational paddle around Vacation Island.  All racers, regardless of how they do, will receive a drawing ticket and chances to win lots of great prizes.
