The folks over at Adventure Kayaking magazine have published a blog post on the high brace. It is worth a read, make sure you read some of the comments as well.

Back in 2011 a group of kayakers paddled down the Green and Colorado Rivers from source to sea and filmed the whole thing. They edited the entire 113 day journey into 3.5 minutes and called the short film, Mirror River.

In March of 2011 Japan suffered a devastating earthquake followed by a series of equally devastating tsunamis. As the waters receded, an estimated 1.5 million tons of debris was washed back into the Pacific – all of which was destined to land on distant shores.
In the summer of 2012 three professional kayakers, supported by a group of scientific advisors, undertook an unprecedented journey to paddle the roadless coast of Washington, and to survey the debris on some of the wildest shoreline in the United States. When they returned, they shared the data they had compiled with the scientific community and put together their story of adventure and environmental crisis in this documentary.
A few folks are going out of Aqua Adventures this Saturday morning for a few hours, and will most likely stay in the bay. Should be patchy fog early, then sun and nice weather, so please join us. We will meet at 8:30, and launch at 9:00. Boat rentals are available. Bring some money for lunch at the deli afterwards, if you can join in for that also.

This Saturday, Feb. 9th, the SoCal Ocean Racing Series race is in Newport Bay. It’s at the Newport Aquatic Center, with the 9 mile long course starting at 9am and the 4 mile short course starting at 11am. Even if you don’t want to race this one, it’s a great way to check out the paddlesports racing scene. If you want to race, $25 gets you hot drinks and snacks for breakfast, a T-shirt, a race, lunch, and a raffle afterward. There will probably be 200 hundred people there, including a handful of CKFers.
Ryan Rushton, co-host and coach for The Gales Storm Gathering, has posted a recap of the event at (http://www.levelsix.com/rough-water-rescues/). It is worth taking a read. I had previously posted the video of one of the rescues that occurred during the event.
This came via CKF.org (via BASK):
This sea kayak rescue took place during a coaches only surf session during the 2012 Gales Storm Gathering on Lake Superior at Wawa, ON. Conditions for the day were winds Force 8-9 and seas to 4 meters. http://vimeo.com/56926839
